For a minor plumbing job such as a leaky tap, a major job such as a new boiler, or an emergency, you need a plumber. You need to choose who to let in to your home, so it is neccessary to find a competent, professional plumber before an emergency happens.

The Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering is the professional body for the plumbing industry and is a registered educational charity with the pupose of improving standards of plumbing.

• Use a member of the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering - members hold recognised qualifications in plumbing.
• Get at least three quotes.
• Ask for a written quote.
• Specify all the work you need doing.
• Ask how long it will take.
• Ask for a full breakdown of the bill on completion.
• Do not pay money before the job is completed.

Gas safety - legal requirements

The Council for Registered Gas Installers (CORGI) is the body given the responsibility by the Health & Safety Executive to maintain a register of competent gas installers.

All businesses who undertake gas work on fittings supplied by natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas, must by law be registered with CORGI.

Prior to engaging anyone to carry out gas work and in order to verify his/her eligibility to undertake gas work, you are encouraged to check with CORGI that they are authorised.

People only tend to think of plumbing or plumbers when something goes wrong. But central heating and plumbing systems need to be checked each year to find any faults before they turn into major problems. And remember that if you are a regular customer a plumber is more likely to drop other work for you in times of emergency.
24 hour emergency plumbers are going to charge more than a plumber with fixed daytime working hours.
Remember to keep the name and telephone number of your plumber somewhere handy for emergencies so that everyone in your household knows who to call.

Burst Pipes

• Bursts and frozen pipes do happen, but to limit the damage while you are waiting for your plumber to arrive.
• Try not to panic!
• Try to prevent water passing the point of the leak.
• Turn off all stop valves (often found under the kitchen sink).
• Open all COLD water taps so that the pipework and storage system drains quickly.
  Don't open the HOT taps.
• Turn off the central heating system. If it uses solid fuel allow the fire to die out.
• Switch off electric immersion heater.
• Call your plumber.

Frozen Pipes

• Turn off the mains supply at the stop valve - often sited under the kitchen sink.
• If no internal valve, turn off water at the external valve - probably under a cover in your garden or drive
• If frozen pipe runs from a storage cistern, check if it has split.
• If split, empty the cold water storage cistern by opening the cold water taps and flushing the WC or by siphoning from the cistern with a garden hose,
• Call your plumber.
• If the pipe has not split, thaw it out with hot water bottles or careful use of a hair dryer.

• Don't thaw too quickly as there may be splits which you can't see.
• Never use a naked flame to thaw a pipe.
• Always start thawing the end nearest to the tap.

If a part of your hot water system is frozen, there could be a risk of explosion if the boiler is kept on, so turn it off, or extinguish the fire.

NB Although water may be flowing from taps, other parts of the system may still be frozen.

Smell gas?
Transco operate a free emergency 24 hour telephone number that you can call if you believe you have a gas leak on 0800 111 999.
But they may very likely get it wrong! And disconnect essential and sound appliances. They are, however, not going to reconnect them. You will have to pay someone else to rectify matters.

If you can smell gas you must:

• Never light a naked flame/smoke/strike a match etc
• Never turn on or off any electrical switches
• Always put out naked flames
• Always open doors and windows
• Keep people away from the affected area
• Turn off the gas meter at the control valve
